Oral hygiene practices everyday are very important throughout your life, no matter if its baby teeth, adult teeth, or dentures. Keeping your teeth and gums healthy can prevent a long list of potential problems for you in the future. Part of good oral hygiene is to continue to stop in for six-month checkups so we can help you monitor things and let you know what is going on.
Our goal is to make sure everything is working properly, and without pain or discomfort. Here we will go over what TMJ is, and what some of the side effects are. What You Need to Know About How Your Dentures Could Be Causing TMJTMJ or Temporomandibular Joint Disorder can cause you all kinds of uncomfortable pains, and prevent you from being able to do everyday activities. When you are in pain it can make your whole day be a chore. If you are experiencing a popping in your jaw, headaches, or neck pain, this could be your dentures not fitting properly, and causing TMJ. TMJ is a displacement in your jaw. There are a lot of joints that connect your jaw to your skull. This allows you to move your jaw up and down, and side to side. You have tendons, muscles, and bones that hold everything together, and if an injury happens to any of these it can lead to symptoms of TMJ. Other symptoms can include ringing in the ears, dizziness, inability to move your jaw, and pressure on your nerves that can lead to numbness or tingling. Having dentures that do not fit properly can add stress to your jaw from an incorrect bite and lead to these problems. You may not even realize where these pains are coming from if not addressed right away. The symptoms can spread to other areas, and the severity of the symptoms are different for each individual person. When your dentures don't sit properly in your mouth can overwork the muscles in your jaw, and make them tired. This can eventually lead to the muscles being overworked in your neck, and they may have a harder time holding your head up leaving you in pain and exhausted. This could also give you a more difficult time with walking around and doing things you never thought twice about. You could have greater risks with tripping or falling as well. We encourage you to contact us with any kind of discomfort, because this could be a warning sign of something else that is going on. We can do an exam, and if need be get you a replacement set of dentures that correct your bite and relieve the stress on your jaw. We are here to not only make you look good, but also to make sure you can enjoy living your life. Please call us for questions or concerns, or to schedule an exam. We are here for you, and we want to make sure you continue smiling. We look forward to hearing from you. Call us today.
