Getting a root canal is generally not very high up on the list of things that most people want to do. However, it is a necessary procedure, and you will find that after a root canal year tooth tends to feel better and be healthier that was before the procedure.

However, once you have gotten a root canal, you may wonder why we suggest following it up with a crown on the affected tooth. To understand this, you first must understand what a crown does, and how it can help protect your tooth.

What is a Crown?

A crown is essentially a "cap" that goes on the top of your tooth. It can be fashioned from a number of materials, but is generally made out of a composite that mimics your natural tooth in appearance.

Having a crown is sometimes the best way to protect a tooth that has been damaged. This is because the composite material is extremely strong and durable and can help keep a tooth firm suffering further trauma.

Why Get a Crown After a Root Canal?

When you get a root canal, we generally drill into the tooth and remove the damaged and decayed material. We then fill the tooth with a medicated material and seal the hole where we drilled.

However, sometimes we can tell that the tooth is going to be susceptible to damage in the future. This is especially the case if the tooth has been cracked or otherwise damaged.

Getting a root canal will frequently address the immediate problem with a tooth. However, for long-term protection, we may suggest getting a crown installed on the tooth in order to minimize the likelihood of future damage.
