When you lose your teeth, one of your options for replacement is dentures. Replacement teeth are set into a gum colored base, which rests directly on your gums.

As a result of how they are situated, your dentures could cause you a significant amount of pain. Dental conditioning may be able to help.

What is Dental Conditioning?

Dental conditioning, also known as tissue conditioning, is a technique that allows you to wear your dentures while your gums are healing, whether you are wearing your first pair of dentures or you've been wearing a pair that fit poorly. With dental conditioning, you can maintain a normal lifestyle while you heal.

Who Can Benefit from Dental Conditioning?

There a several situations when dental conditioning can be beneficial:

•  Healing after tooth extractions.
•  You have experienced accelerated bone loss, due to poorly fitting dentures. You may have noticed that the fit of your dentures worsens rapidly, your facial shape has changed, and it is aging at a rapid pace.
•  Your dentures have caused your gums to become irritated and inflamed.

How Dental Conditioning Works

The idea behind dental conditioning is to provide your gums with some much-needed relief from the pressure exerted on them by your dentures. In order to do this, your dentist may place a temporary liner inside your dentures. This will provide the cushion you need for your gums to heal if you are adjusting to your first pair. A liner can also help if your gums are sore, and your current dentures are still in good shape.

In some cases, if your current dentures are not conducive to healing, you may be provided with a set of soft, flexible temporary dentures until your gums have healed. With dental conditioning, blood flow is restored to your gums and makes wearing your dentures more comfortable. If your dentures are causing you pain, ask your dentist if dental conditioning can help!
