What Goes Into Replacement Dentures?

When you get your dentures, they look like they can last forever. The fact is that they can't. Dentures are designed to last about 5 - 10 years. At that time, they can be adjusted or realigned if needed, but at some point, you will have to get them replaced. There are many reasons that your dentures may need replacement, but the primary reason is that they simply wear out over time.

What Are My Options With Dentures?

Repair is an option if you break your dentures by dropping them, for example. If this should happen, you should bring them back to the dentist who made them for you.

Do not attempt to repair them yourself because if they aren't repaired properly, you could have problems chewing, talking and could develop sores in your mouth or other problems.

You may have to get your dentures relined before they need to be replaced. As time goes on, your jaw loses bone and your dentures stop fitting as tightly as they used to. When this happens, you can get your dentures relined. This process refits the base of your denture. Over-the-counter kits to realign dentures are available, but they do not provide the tighter fit that your dentist can provide.

Finally, you may have to get your dentures replaced. Over time, as you use your dentures, the teeth in the denture wear down and make it difficult to chew. Changes in your jaw structure due to the normal bone loss that is expected when you wear dentures will also eventually require that your dentures be replaced.

Your dentures will last you a long time, but they won't last forever. Relining and repairing are options for you, but at some point, the teeth in your dentures will wear due to normal use and you will have to seek a replacement
